When does the season start and end?

Typically teams will begin their season the last week of March or first week of April; and will end with the State Tournament the last week of June or the first week of July.  Some teams do however extend their season past the State Tournaments by participating in additional tournaments such as the USSSA World Series.

How many games do the teams play in a season?

Depending on the age group and the availability of competitive teams, most the younger teams play between 40 and 50 games, while the older teams will play between 50 and 60 games in a season.

How many Tournaments do teams play?

This is depended on the team and their fundraising efforts; but normally each team will play 4-6 tournaments.

How much travel is involved with BJSA Select Baseball?

During the week games are played in the metro area; including Bellevue, Omaha, Lincoln, Columbus, Norfolk and Plattsmouth.

However weekend tournaments are scheduled by various organizations similar to BJSA throughout the Midwest that teams can travel to.

Is there a minimum playing time rule or standard?

No, there is no minimal playing rule.  However with that said, all coaches do their best to get each player as many innings a possible throughout the year.

What is the cutoff date for determining what age my child will tryout for?

The cutoff date and age is the age the player is on April 30 of the following year of tryouts.  Meaning, if you are trying out in 2014 for the Spring 2015 11 year old team, then your player has to be 11 or under on April 30, 2015

What is the criteria used to select players?

Coaches will evaluate players on the following skills:

  • Fielding – Mechanics and form when fielding grounders in the infield,
  • Outfield – How well a player tracks down pop flies, mechanics and form when catching and throwing.
  • Throwing - accuracy and arm strength
  • Speed – timed runs from Home to 1B, 1B to 3B and Home to Home
  • Hitting – both contact and power
  • Pitching – strength, accuracy and form when pitching.
  • Attitude – Does the player appear to listen to the coaches and do they appear “coachable”

When are tryouts

Usually tryouts are held the 1st and 2nd week of July

What equipment is supplied by BJSA?

As part of the player registration fee, BJSA will provide the following:

  • (2) jerseys, one home and one away
  • (2) pants, usually gray or white
  • (2) hats
  • (2) pair of purple socks
  • (1) belt

Items such as gloves, bats, helmets, bags etc. are the responsibility of the parents to obtain.

When are practices

Practice times are set by your coach. Your coach will inform you on their practice schedule when you are initially contacted and/or as the season progresses.
